Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) is a nationally recognized preparedness program developed by the Texas State University Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center. This course is designed to help civilians understand how to respond during an active shooter or violent intruder situation with awareness, purpose, and informed decision-making.
CRASE training focuses on preparation over panic, teaching participants practical strategies that can be applied in workplaces, warehouses, schools, churches, offices, and public spaces. The goal is not to create fear, but to replace uncertainty with understanding.
Participants will learn:
- How to recognize warning signs and pre-incident indicators
- The principles of Avoid, Deny, Defend
- Situational awareness and personal safety considerations
- How to make informed decisions under extreme stress
- How to respond once law enforcement arrives
Instruction is discussion-based, scenario-driven, and grounded in real-world case studies. Participants gain a better understanding of how quickly situations can evolve and how preparation and awareness can influence outcomes.
CRASE training emphasizes that doing nothing is still a decision, and that having a plan, even a simple one, can save lives. The course empowers individuals to think clearly, act decisively, and prioritize safety for themselves and others.
Preparedness is not about fear. It’s about responsibility, awareness, and the ability to respond when the unthinkable happens.
Each student that enrolls for any class involving CPR must be physically capable of bending their legs and have full range of motion of their arms. Participants should expect to be on their knees for an extended period of time throughout the course instruction. Performing CPR requires strength and good physical health as it could be physically challenging for some students. Wear comfortable stretchy clothing.
