Well Welcome to, what I’m feeling is a very exciting episode of Warehouse and Operations as a Career!  I’m Marty T Hawkins and this is the 100th weekly episode of our WAOC Podcast.  We’ve had a blast putting something together each week to discuss and to share some experiences on topics that you, our listeners, have sent to us in many instances or thoughts we’ve hoped that you’d find interesting.  We here at WAOC kind of have a passion for Operations and the many advancements and opportunities the Industry can bring to us as employees and our families!  We’ve tried to learn a little about audio along the way, and I hope we’ve gotten a little easier to listen too over time but please don’t hold us to too high of a quality standard.  We do know warehousing and transportation though and don’t mind sharing our experiences with you.  I try hard to avoid interjecting an opinion here and there but hey, sometimes trying just has to count!  Remember WAOC is on Facebook and Twitter too, you can share your experiences with us there using @whseandops and one of us are usually creeping on the Warehouse Equipment Operators Community Group Facebook page in the evenings as well.  Email us to say hi or suggest topics, shoot, even to comment on something we’ve said. Just send that to host@warehouseandoperationsasacareer.com, and you can even comment on our website www.warehouseandoperationsasacareer.com, we love hearing from you!

I’ve reached out to the whole WAOC gang today and they’ve so graciously volunteered their time to call in and talk about what they love, which is Op’s, and answer some of your questions and share some of their experiences.

You all know Joe, Joe’s been with us several times and is our go to Safety man here at WAOC.  Joe, I’d introduce you, but I’d mess up all the letters on all the certifications you hold Sir, welcome back and tell us a little about yourself and what you do?

Joe –

It’s nice to have John back with us today, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to interview john about this same time last year.  We ran into each other in Nevada, we were there for a sponsored event for the American Heart Association.  John as you’ll remember is the National V.P. of Operations for Belmar Integrated Logistics, a national sourcing and unloading firm.  John its great having you back on the show, what have you been up to?

John –

I was finally able to chisel out some time with Rodrigo, Rodrigo is a Regional Facilities Manager over seeing quite a few associates across several states.  He’s an Op’s guy that definitely stays busy!  How have you been doing Sir?

Rodrigo –

And then there’s Chicago, Phillip’s been on the show a couple of times now.  Phillip is a regional manager based in Chicago overseeing operations in the local area and a couple of states on either side of him.  How’ve you been doing, I hear your dipping a toe into Sales up there?

Phillip –

So gentlemen, as you know I’m a bit involved in the training and coaching arenas and work closely with the sourcing and staffing communities and cities.  Are ya’ll seeing an uptick or increase in traffic or people looking for work?  John do you think the national average of unemployment being at 3.9 through July of this year, is that driving more people to staffing since there’s still people looking for work and employers looking for people.   Or do I have that just reversed? Or are employers begging for workers? What’s up there?

John –

Are you seeing the same thing out in Chicago Phillip or is there jobs for everyone and people for every job up their Sir?   (Mar 4.5)

Phillip –

Rodrigo, based on what they’ve said, what are you seeing on the floor, are the new boot’s doing a good job, are we getting qualified people or are companies spending a lot of time and dollars on training?

Rodrigo –

Joe, with people coming into the industry, maybe from retail or services like restaurants, how does that affect safety incident rates, I guess we’d call them near misses or maybe even accidents.  What are you seeing?

Joe –

You’re a true Safety man, kind of live and breathe it, are those new to the industry receptive to all the Safety and Position training required for these positions & if not what can we do better as an industry?

Joe –

What about training Rodrigo, you see how companies are training or their programs every day.  Are we doing what we should be doing & if so how do you see it being perceived by our associates?  What could they be doing differently?

Rodrigo –

John, your dealings are more on a Corporate level, are companies doing a good job with training or are you hearing of any plans to make any large changes?

John –

Joe, companies do a great job adhering to the OSHA reg’s and practices don’t they Sir?

Joe –

What about at the floor level, are our Supervisors versed enough?  What about us as employees, is it ok to be speaking up and asking questions about Safety?

Joe –

Phillip, your handling a young start-up company, without a doubt it’s going to grow into a large national outfit, chime in on those last few questions there?

Phillip –

Let’s talk about the time clock gentlemen, Rodrigo you visit a lot of facilities each month and oversee several different payrolls.  I hear a lot of HR’s complaining every Monday about hours.  Is it a problem and if so why don’t we punch in and out?

Rodrigo – –

Phillip, you seeing the same thing? Give us a fix for it Sir?

Phillip –

I’m telling today’s applicants Op’s is where it’s at!  John, knowing what I do about your background you’d have to be a firm believer that there’s advancement opportunities out there right?

John –

Gentlemen, why aren’t more of today’s youth seeing or taking advantage of those advantages?

I really want to thank each of you for taking time out of your busy schedules to visit with us here at Warehouse and Operations as a Career, I know I learn something every time we get together.  An a Thank You to each of our listeners each week, I hope we’re bringing you information you can use and apply to your advancement and Careers.  Keep those topics and questions coming in and we’ll keep putting episodes out!  Until next week, or episode 101, Think Safe, Be Safe and share your experiences with a New Boot on the floor!
